What we stand for
This is an intersectional group
to cater to the needs of the Black and Minority Ethnic Anglican community
(BAME). We welcome anyone whooriginates from or has
ancestry from Africa, Asia, Middle East and Latin America multi heritage and
indigenous backgrounds. Non-BAME people are welcome to use this website to
further their understanding of race and ethnicity within the context of the
Church.
We take into account that race
and ethnicity is one aspect of our identity as are others such as gender,
sexuality, disability. Keeping that in mind we like to acknowledge we do not
live our lives in though a single issue but are products of a variety of issues
which govern the way we perceive the world. For instance it is possible to be
black, homosexual, disabled and a Christian. Neither of these aspects of
identity can be separated from one another nor should they be. Using the
concept of Intersectionality as proposed by Dr Kimberly Crenshaw we would like
our group to reflect the same. We would like our identities to be treated as a
whole without having to choose loyalties and split and categorise our
experiences. While race will be our primary focus of interest we acknowledge
our readers and contributors identities encompass other identities too.
We would like to understand how
race functions in the context of the Anglican Church, which has dioceses across
the world. Acknowledging that racism is not a new issue nor is it one that
seems to be diminishing we would like to discuss how the issue can be tackled.
Racism affects individuals and communities adversely and it is not in keeping
with church teaching. It is essential to tackle this problem which is a barrier
in church participation.
This group will discuss these
issues at length and provide resources for those interested in learning more
about racial issues in the Anglican Church. Keeping in mind
the diverse range of worship styles in the Anglican Church we would like to see
healthy debate and not antagonism.
We reject racism, misogyny, violence, aggression, sexism, ablism,
homophobia, transphobia, casteism, white supremacy, patriarchy and oppressive
ideologies.
