St. Adrian was a Berber, born in Africa and
later became abbot of the monastery at Nerida, near Naples. Pope Vitalian was
impressed with St Adrian's faith and virtue, so he decided to name him as the
next archbishop of Canterbury. Adrian declined the appointment twice and
suggested St. Theodore take the post. The Pope agreed and insisted that Adrian
accompany St. Theodore to Canterbury because Adrian had made the journey to
Gaul twice before and was familiar with the route. Detained in Gaul he
eventually reached Canterbury. He was appointed Abbot of Sts. Peter and Paul
Monastery near Canterbury by Theodore, as the pope had ordered. During his
thirty-nine years as abbot, the monastery became renowned due to the teaching
of St. Adrian, who instructed his students in languages, the sciences, and the
faith. His tomb became famous for the miracles which happened there.
