Black History Month - St Marciana of Mauretania




Name - Marciana of Mauretania

Died – 303, Caesarea, Mauretania

Veneration – Roman Catholic Church.

Feast – 9th January

Patronage – invoked to cure wounds

Attributes- represented as a maiden gored by a bull; sometimes depicted with a leopard and bull near her; martyr's palm




St Marciana was from Mauretania Caesariensis (now Algeria). During the persecutions of Christians by Roman Emperor Diocletian, she was accused of having smashed a statue of Diana. As punishment Marciana was thrown to the wild beasts in the amphitheatre of Caesarea.  He final punishment was to be thrown to gladiators who would violate her chastity, She was gored to death by a bull and mauled by a leopard and died of her injuries.
