The Life-Struggles of Walatta Petros (Gädlä Wälättä P̣eṭros) was written in 1672. Married to Mälkə’ä Krəstos she gave birth to three children who all died in infancy. Refused to convert to Roman Catholicism. When she learnt her husband had supported the killing the patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, she left him for the final time, becoming a nun at the age of 25 in 1617.

Her biography describes the day she met Eheta Kristos (1601-1649), another noblewoman who had given up married life to become a nun. Their relationship is an example of same sex companionship.

Walatta Petros died on November 24, 1642 (age 50). She served her religious community for twenty-six years.

She was a fierce female leader who did not suffer fools, conquered kings, and was much beloved. Her miracles generally involved helping her followers escape murderous state power and making sure that the bread and beer didn’t run out.” Wendy Laura Belcher
