Henriette Delille was a creole woman born in New Orleans, Her mother, Marie-Josèphe "Pouponne" Días, was a free woman of color. She strongly objected to the plaçage system, which allowed European men to marry free women of color and leave them for white women. At the age of 14 Henriette began teaching at the local Catholic school. In 1836 she founded a small order of nuns- Sisters of the Presentation. The original members consisted of Delille, and other young Créole women.  They cared for the sick, helped the poor, and instructed free and enslaved children and adults. They opened America's first Catholic home for the elderly
