St Peter is believed to have grown up under
the tutelage of Archbishop Theonas. He was chosen as the Archbishop of
Alexandria in the year 300, during his time he helped the Church grow. In 303,
the persecutions of Roman Emperor Diocletian began. Forced to flee, he was
usurped by Bishop Meletius.
In 311 he returned to Alexandria, where he was arrested and sentenced to death.
His executioners beheaded him in the same place as the Apostle Mark.
