Black History Month- Venerable Pierre Toussaint




Name - Pierre Toussaint

Born – 27th June 1766

Died -30th June 1853 (aged 87)

Veneration – Roman Catholic Church

Pierre was born into slavery on 27th June, 1766 in modern-day Haiti. Pierre married Juliette Noel, a slave, after purchasing her freedom.  They adopted his niece Euphemia, the daughter of his late sister Rosalie, raising the girl as their own. Pierre and Juliette dedicated their lives to helping the poor and the needy.

He was a benefactor of the first New York City Catholic school for Black children at St. Vincent de Paul on Canal Street.
