Black History Month - Archbishop Janani Jakaliya Luwum

Name – Janani Jakaliya Luwum Born – 1922 Died – 17 th February 1977 (aged 55) Veneration – Anglican Communion Feast – 17 th February Luwum was born in the village of Mucwini, Uganda. Converting to Christianity in 1948, he went to Buwalasi Theological College . He was ordained a deacon in 1953, and the following year he was ordained a priest. In 1969 he was consecrated Bishop of the Diocese of Northern Uganda. After five years he was appointed Archbishop of the Metropolitan Province of Uganda, Rwanda , Burundi , and Boga (in Zaire ), becoming the second African to hold this position. Archbishop Luwum was a leading voice of criticism the Idi Amin regime that assumed power in 1971. He delivered a note of protest to dictator Idi Amin against the policies of arbitrary killings and unexplained disappearances. Black History Month- St Manche Masemola

Name – St Manche Masemola Born – 1913 Died - 1928 (aged 14–15) Veneration – Anglican Communion Feast – 4 th February Saint Manche Masemola, was born into the Pedi tribe, in the Transvaal. She worked on the land with her family. In 1919 Fr Augustine Moeka of the Anglican Community of the Resurrection had established a mission, which drew the interest of her and her cousin Lucia. Wanting to hear more she began to attending classes twice a week. Her parents feared that she would leave them, or refuse to marry, tried to    discourage her. Manche remained defiant, she was beaten severely for this. Fearing for her life she confided in her cousins. She was killed in 1928. In 1969 her mother was baptised into the Anglican Church. In 1975 the name of Manche Masemola was added to the calendar of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa. Her statue stands over the west entrance to Westminster Abbey.

Name – Venerable Mother Henriette DeLille Born – 1813 Died – 16 th November, 1862 Veneration – Roman Catholic Church Henriette Delille was a creole woman born in New Orleans, Her mother, Marie-Josèphe "Pouponne" Días, was a free woman of color . She strongly objected to the plaçage system, which allowed European men to marry free women of color and leave them for white women. At the age of 14 Henriette began teaching at the local Catholic school. In 1836 she founded a small order of nuns- Sisters of the Presentation. The original members consisted of Delille, and other young Créole women.   They cared for the sick, helped the poor, and instructed free and enslaved children and adults. Name – Pope Peter I of Alexandria Born – 3rd century Died – 25 th November 311 Veneration – Oriental Orthodoxy , Eastern Orthodoxy , Catholicism Feast – 25 th November Attributes – Vested as a bishop , holding a Gospel Book St Peter is believed to have grown up under the tutelage of Archbishop Theonas. He was chosen as the Archbishop of Alexandria in the year 300, during his time he helped the Church grow. In 303, the persecutions of Roman Emperor Diocletian began. Forced to flee, he was usurped by Bishop Meletius. In 311 he returned to Alexandria, where he was arrested and sentenced to death. His executioners beheaded him in the same place as the Apostle Mark. Name - Marciana of Mauretania Died – 303, Caesarea, Mauretania Veneration – Roman Catholic Church. Feast – 9 th January Patronage – invoked to cure wounds Attributes- represented as a maiden gored by a bull; sometimes depicted with a leopard and bull near her; martyr's palm St Marciana was from Mauretania Caesariensis (now Algeria ). During the persecutions of Christians by Roman Emperor Diocletian , she was accused of having smashed a statue of Diana . As punishment Marciana was thrown to the wild beasts in the amphitheatre of Caesarea .   He final punishment was to be thrown to gladiators who would violate her chastity, She was gored to death by a bull and mauled by a leopard and died of her injuries. Add caption Name   – Korean martyrs Born – Various Died – 1791-1888 Veneration – Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Communion   Beatified – 5 th July 1925 Canonised – 6 th May 1984 Feast – 20 th September, 9 th May and 29 th May Scholars introduced Christianity to Korea, which drew ordinary    people who flocked to the new religion. These converts called themselves Chonju Kyo Udul , (Friends of the Teaching of God of Heaven). While Chinese Christian literature was imported into the country there were no priests to take Mass.Catholics gathering in one place with no distinction on the basis of class were perceived to undermine 'hierarchical Confuciansim'. This lead to suspicion from the authorities who persecuted missionaries and all those who supported them. Name – Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Born – 2 nd November 1651 Died – 17 th April 1695 (aged 43) Poet, dramatist, scholar, feminist and nun , Juana was self-taught, she advocated for women’s education. He writing met both admiration or criticism. Her notable works include The Dream (poetry), Pawns of a House and Love is More a Labyrinth (drama). She died at the age of 43, after catching the plague while treating her fellow nuns . The convent in Mexico City in which she lived the and where she wrote most of her work is today the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana . Name - St (H)adrian of Canterbury Born - 635 Died – 9 th January 710 Veneration – Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Communion Feast - 9 th January Patronage – Patron saint of BAMEAnglican St. Adrian was a Berber, born in Africa and later became abbot of the monastery at Nerida, near Naples. Pope Vitalian was impressed with St Adrian's faith and virtue, so he decided to name him as the next archbishop of Canterbury. Adrian declined the appointment twice and suggested St. Theodore take the post. The Pope agreed and insisted that Adrian accompany St. Theodore to Canterbury because Adrian had made the journey to Gaul twice before and was familiar with the route. Detained in Gaul he eventually reached Canterbury. He was appointed Abbot of Sts. Peter and Paul Monastery near Canterbury by Theodore, as the pope had ordered. Name - St Mariam Baouardy Born – 5 th January 1846 Died – 26 th August 1878 (aged 31) Veneration – Catholic Church Beatified – 13 th November 1983 Canonised – 17 th May 2015 Feast – 26 th August Attributes- Carmelite Nun's habit Baouardy's parents both died from an illness in 1848, only a few days apart. Raised by her aunt and uncle she showed great religious fervor. A divine revelation a night before her wedding lead her to feel she was not called to marriage but to offer her life to God. Her uncle beat her severely for calling of the wedding. A male servant learning of her misfortune tried to woo her, she rejected his advances, upon which he flew into a rage and slashed her throat and left her for dead. Rescued by nuns, she ultimately joined a convent and dedicated her life to God. She suffered from the after effects of this accident for life and died at a young age. Link
